Taking It Cheesy ... Crazy Tales of Alex & Spencer
Seriously … how did they get so big?

Do you remember the Doozers? They were the little green guys that loved to build in Fraggle Rock. I think the Fraggles liked to eat the Doozers’ creations. Well, there is a new animated show based on those Doozers, starring 4 kid Doozers who love to invent things. This has inspired Alex to create and invent and overall wow us with some of his ideas … but that’s another blog post. His favorite Doozers show is where they build a gingerbread house. It kept cracking, falling down, and getting eaten. So Alex decided he wanted to build one. We didn’t have the chance to make one over Christmas with all the sickness, so we figured, why not? We just made it with Valentine’s candy.

 Alex loved spreading frosting on our graham crackers (we cheated a little) and sprinkling the “flowers” in front of the house. |
 It was nice to spend some special time with Alex while Spencer was napping. |

A couple of days before Christmas, Alex was drawing on a piece of paper and decided to draw pictures of things he wanted for Christmas for Santa. I told him we could mail his pictures so Santa would know what he wanted. This was perfect, since we didn’t get to talk to Santa and take pictures with him this year. Here is his envelope, all ready for the mailbox.

On Christmas Eve, we baked oatmeal cookies and Alex had a blast decorating them. We did this while Spencer was napping. Next year, I know Spencer will love decorating the cookies with big brother!

Before bed, Alex carefully chose two cookies for Santa, filled a cup of water for him to drink, and counted 9 carrots for the reindeer. He also wrote his name for Santa.

One of Alex’s new favorite games is “share ice cream with Spencer”. Alex gives Spencer a bite, then he runs to me and eats a bite. Alex and Spencer both think it’s great!

Last Monday, we had friends over to read If You Give a Moose a Muffin (same author as If You Give a Mouse a Cookie) and to bake pumpkin muffins. We had a blast, but my kitchen table was a disaster! We had 5 preschoolers taking turns mixing the batter and 4 babies/toddlers running around the playroom. I was worn out by the end, but I’m so glad we hosted! Next time though, we might just read If You Give a Dog a Donut at Dunkin Donuts.

Last week, the boys and I went to a friend’s house to read If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and bake cookies. We had so much fun! Miss Susan took the boys step-by-step through the recipe and we put the boys to work. We didn’t even need a mixer!

Alex requested “trees”, carrots, and applesauce for dinner. I added in the chicken meatballs. I wish I had thought to take a picture of the “after” … he really ate most of it! We were so impressed when the first thing he asked for was, “trees”. I guess he’s a fan of Ina Garten’s roasted broccoli!
Alex helped us make French Bread Pizza the other night. He had a lot of fun spreading the pizza sauce on the bread and eating all the baby pepperonis. He actually tried to sneak away with the bag of pepperoni and wouldn’t let us put it on the pizza! He also ate the bell pepper and tasted a mushroom (he was not impressed with the mushroom). He was so full from snacking, he only ate a few bites of the final product, but at least he declared it “nummy”!

We celebrated Memorial Day Weekend with homemade pasta and spaghetti sauce. Kind of non-traditional, I know! When we moved from Charleston, we gave our grill to Aunt Brie and Uncle Jared, then our rental in Wilmington had a grill, so we just haven’t gotten around to buying a new one – meaning, no grilled food for us on a typical grilling weekend! Oh well, our meal was fantastic! Oh, and thanks to Aunt Brie and Uncle Jared for gifting us the pasta making supplies years ago!

Alex has started taking an interest in my activities in the kitchen. Since I want him to grow up knowing how to cook healthy meals and to have an appreciation for good food, I’ve decided to find little ways for him to help around the kitchen. So far, he’s helped me dump cans of beans and corn in the colander for chili, “helped” me dice veggies, and helps unload the dishwasher. I plan on getting braver and letting him help more often – I just need to embrace the mess that will come along, too!
